Our ESL Literacy Club
Parents come to the classroom to learn reading comprehension strategies or "tools" that the children learn in their classrooms. Parents and children work together reading books chosen for specific strategies. Reading in the home language is greatly encouraged. Children who can read and comprehend in their own language, are better readers in the second language. Every strategy is explained in a letter to the parents. You may see and hear how to use a strategy by clicking on this link: http://eslsummerreading.blogspot.com/
You are welcome to bring brothers and sisters.
Here are some of the things we discuss at our meetings:
– Helping your child with the school routine- from snacks to homework
– Reading with your child, the basics and a picture walk
– Using what you already know to help your child understand books
– Connecting what you read with your life and other books. Connecting what you read with the world – we will learn about Thanksgiving and make a connection with a similar holiday from your culture.
–Parent/Teacher Conferences – what you need to know to get ready for conferences
- Asking questions to deepen understanding
- More about asking questions and looking at some of the ways children learn to read words
- Reviewing the strategies we have learned up to now and celebrating the end of the year!
