Where Children and parents can discuss their thinking, ideas and the world!
Can you eat the alphabet? Lois Ehlert, the author of Eating The Alphabet, inspired us to discuss whether this is possible. We read her book and discovered a whole new world of fruits and vegetables. Here are some examples of fruits and vegetables that we like and why we like them. "I like watermelon because it is delicious." "I like apples because they are sweet." I like oranges because they are juicy."
Please write about a fruit and a vegetable you like and tell us why.

We read Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann. The book has no words, except for a few speech bubbles. We decided to write sentences to match the pictures and we also thought it would be fun to add speech bubbles so the animals could speak. Let us know what you think and have fun talking about the book with your family.
Fall is almost over. The wonderful and vibrant colors on the trees are flying away in the wind. The colorful leaves land on the streets and on the ground creating a carpet of red, yellow, gold, brown, green, ochre, orange. Here are some photographs of the last amazing colors of fall still on the trees. Post your comments as you think of what the colors make you think of. We have been reading different kinds of books about fall. Here are some of our most liked titles. The Busy Tree, by Jennifer Ward and Mystery Vine by Cathryn Falwell gave us many chances to engage in interesting and deep conversations.
I have included two other poems by Douglas Florian that we had fun reading. See if you remember what some of them are and post your comments. Last week, one of my students brought a book he had borrowed from he library about fall. He was so excited to share it with me and his class that I immediately read it. The book is Mystery Vine by Cathryn Falwell. I think you would enjoy reading it with your child. Luke borrowed it from the Paramus Library. If you would like to purchase it, below is the book on amazon.com or you can go to our local Barnes & Noble. At the end of the book, there is a recipe for Pumpkin Apple Bread-see photo below. I told the children I would bake it that night. Here is the result, I took pictures of the steps which you can see below. The bread was delicious and nutritious! My family loved it. The next day, I brought it into Luke's classroom and they all "tasted it with their noses". I hope you enjoy the book and the recipe. Happy baking! Fall is one of the most colorful seasons in our area. It is one of my favorite seasons because it is filled with vibrant and amazing colors that nature gives us to enjoy. I recently visited a farm and of course, thought of all of you and how much you would have enjoyed it. Here are some pictures that I took. I made them into a slide show. Please look at them with your parents. I have added questions for you to answer and discuss. Post your comments so we can read them together in school. Enjoy this virtual fieldtrip. It is a slideshow. There is a pause/play button on the top left of the image and arrows on the top right. Please pause the slide show so you can look closely and enjoy the pictures. You can also read the captions slowly. One of my favorite poets and artists is Douglas Florian. I have read many of his poems to my students through the years. Last year, I posted some of his poems from his book, Poetrees. Here are two poems from his book, Autumnblings. We are talking about different fall experiences we have using our five senses. We have also talked about the things we like about fall and why, and the things we dislike about fall and why. Florian uses stronger words, love and hate, which describe our feelings more intensely. Please read the poems with your child and post what you like and dislike about fall and tell us why. Happy posting! Welcome to our blog. This space is for you and your family to share thoughts, conversations about photographs, topics we learn in class and questions I post. I would like you to discuss what you see on the blog in your language and in English. Then you can ask an adult in your home to help you write a response or comment.
Please read what other friends have written and reply to them if you would like to. Some friends have shared pictures too. As you can see, many kindergartners, their older siblings and their families used my blog last year. It has become a great place to share and learn! If you visit a place you would like us to know about, please send me the pictures and what you want me to write for all of us to learn about it. Below are two photos I took this weekend that show us the beginning of fall or autumn. Can you see on the right? Is it me or my sh_____? I will be posting more photos very soon! We have been learning about seeds, planting, fruits, vegetables and flowers. We have planted seeds and watched them grow. We are reading lots of different books on planting, above are some of our favorites! Please post a comment on one of the books, at least, telling what you liked about it and why. Another one of our friends has been observing signs of spring. She brought us this picture that she took in her garden. Can you tell what it is? Can you describe how it got there? Please post your comment. We are observing the changes in nature. We go outside and draw what we see. We label our pictures and color them as "scientists and illustrators". Look at the tree on the right. Describe what you see and explain what is happening with it and what will happen with it as it gets warmer. Post your comments. We find different trees and flowers to observe. Here we are drawing the tree in front of the school. The tree is beginning to show buds that will blossom soon. See if you have a tree with buds near you. Draw a picture of it, label it and bring it to class. ON YOUR WAY TO AND FROM SCHOOL, OBSERVE THE CHANGES IN NATURE. TAKE A PICTURE AND ALSO DRAW WHAT YOU SEE, THEN SHARE IT WITH US IN CLASS AND ON OUR BLOG. Some of us went to see what is happening next to Cherry Hill. It is a wonderful surprise. Go take a look and then post what you discovered! |
